BlockbustersWeL!ke: Pirates Number Four!

Speaking to HitFix.com producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that the fourth episode of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series is more of a priority than the movie debut of The Lone Ranger.

"I think for Disney it will mostly be 'Pirates,' obviously," Bruckheimer says. "That's a great franchise for them and for us too. Beloved, with a great character and Johnny's really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. "

Bruckheimer added that the first pages of script for the fourth film are funny and "it's a whole new way of going." There might also be a chance for "Pirates" trilogy director Gore Verbinski to return as well.

BlockbustersWeL!ke: Hannah Montana is a hit movie!

mwl
Miley Cyrus proved that she remains the queen of preteenage girls, powering Walt Disney’s “Hannah Montana: The Movie” to first place over the weekend, with an estimated $34 million in tickets at North American theaters, breaking several minor box-office records.

The blockbuster television series “Hannah Montana” has been transformative for the Disney Channel, establishing it as home base for young girls. The show’s construct is now familiar around the world: a girl (Ms. Cyrus) is a dorky student by day and a pop sensation by night.

But the big screen is a different ballgame, one that Disney’s teenage stars often fail to conquer. “The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” staring Hilary Duff, sold a modest $17.3 million in tickets over its opening weekend in 2003. In February “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience” severely underperformed expectations, opening to $12.5 million.

“Hannah Montana: The Movie,” directed by Peter Chelsom from a script by Dan Berendsen, became the best April showing in industry history for a Disney movie, and Friday’s opening of $17.3 million in ticket sales broke a record for a G-rated live-action film, according to Disney. Overall, ticket sales for 2009 are up 17 percent compared with last year, according to Media by Numbers, a box-office tracking service; attendance is up 15 percent.

Second place at the weekend box office went to “Fast & Furious,” a reboot of the street-racing movie franchise from Universal Pictures that opened to an unexpectedly strong No. 1 last week. The movie sold an estimated $28.8 million in tickets over the weekend for a cumulative $118 million. “Monsters vs. Aliens,” from DreamWorks Animation, continued to show strength, landing in third place with an estimated $22.6 million in tickets for a new total of $141 million.

BlockbustersWeL!ke: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

mwl
Alfred Molina is readying his potions for "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." The actor has signed on to play the evil magician Horvath in the Disney fantasy drama starring Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel.

Jon Turteltaub ("National Treasure") is directing the film, and Jerry Bruckheimer is producing. The story centers on an average college student (Baruchel) who is recruited to work for a sorcerer named Balthazar Blake (Cage). The man gives his reluctant student a crash course in the art and science of magic to prepare him for a battle against the forces of darkness in modern Manhattan.

Teresa Palmer also is in the cast, playing Baruchel's love interest. Molina's deal puts him back into Disney and Bruckheimer's fold; he recently wrapped a turn as Sheik Amar in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," which the studio will release in May 2010.

BlockbustersWeL!ke: Woverine - The Deadpool mystery solved

mwl
Actor Ryan Reynolds talks to MTV about his mutant character in the new X-Men movie Wolverine .

That, I would say, is Deadpool, yeah,” Reynolds told MTV News. “When I’m in the scarred makeup too, and you’ll see closer shots obviously in the film, and it’s hard to even tell that’s me, but you can tell. You’ve just got to find a better shot.”

“I’m not going to get into exactly what’s going on with his mouth, particularly because he is ‘the merc with the mouth,’” added Reynolds when asked, given his previous response, what it was like to film with his mouth sealed. “But it’s going to be pretty interesting when people see it. People are going to be blown away and have a deep appreciation for what it is and how that character fits into this universe.”

There has been sort of a Deadpool mystery since last month when Toy Fair in New York City yielded first clue in the form of a Deadpool action figure that looked nothing like the Marvel Comics version of the character. Since then, the Deadpool/Weapon XI debate has been one of out hot-button online issues, and while Reynolds’ answer seems to put some closure on the issue, we’re still left with lots of questions — namely, what’s the deal with the arm blades, tattoos and, well… lack of a mouth?

The film opens in the US in May 1st

BlockbustersWeL!ke: Wonder Woman film to go ahead

mwl
It’s official — 2009 has kicked off to a great start for Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Heath Ledger and “The Dark Knight” landed Oscar gold, “Watchmen” has fans and critics buzzing, and so far, the studio hasn’t missed a beat with their 2010 slate of adaptations, “Green Lantern” and “Jonah Hex.” But just when you thought it couldn’t get any better to be a DC fan, we are now hearing reports via IESB that Warners and Joel Silver’s Silver Pictures are dusting the cobwebs off of a “Wonder Woman” feature film, saying there’s been “quite a bit of movement” in Burbank regarding the project.

According to the site’s anonymous inside sources (which means this remains firmly in the “rumor” category), new Silver Pictures head-honcho Andrew Roma is “eager to get started on the movie” and has been working with Warners looking for writers and pitches for the long-dormant property.

Granted, after years of stops and starts with a “Wonder Woman” live-action flick, most fans out there have resigned themselves to an “I’ll believe it when I see it” stance. Likewise, in the past year alone, we’ve seen a bevy of rumors regarding DC’s resident Amazonian Princess’ possible jump to the big screen — ranging from Los Bros. Wachowski taking a crack at the franchise, to Beyoncé in talks for the “Wonder Woman” lead role. However, given Warner Bros. and DC’s current status as surefire box office draws — not to mention the highly-anticipated “Wonder Woman” animated feature film — we’re guessing (and hoping) this won’t be the last we hear of the Amazon’s march to the multiplex. Keep it locked, Splash Pagers!

Stars We L!ke: SATC Sequel

mwl
Sex and the City and the economic recession don't exactly go hand in hand. Carrie Bradshaw's closet full of Manolo Blahnik pumps is enough to make any financial advisor gag. But according to Sarah Jessica Parker, the high fashion gals are set to go from fashionistas to recessionistas. Parker says they plan to make the film's sequel recession-friendly. "There is a lot that we have to think about because times are very different. So these are nice challenges, these are good challenges," Parker told Access Hollywood.

Parker, who is also co-producer of the TV series-turned-film notes that the challenge may be tough, but says they are committed to portraying it accurately. "How do we do that well? And how do we do that in a not lazy way? How do we address these economic times in a franchise that has a lot to do with luxury and labels?" added Parker.

But before SATC fans get their La Perlas in a bunch, think back to the television series (circa 1998, seasons one through three). Carrie Bradshaw embraced vintage clothing like no other, pairing colours, patterns and textures to create her signature, eclectic style. (Or maybe stylist Patricia Field's style). That might be one way they decide to discount their duds. But I'm sure the sequel is approaching this idea with caution, in order to beat the first film's $55.7 million North American opening weekend.

The film's co-producer, Michael Patrick King is reportedly working on the script. The film's stars, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon have all signed on for the sequel.

The sequel to Sex and the City: The Movie isn't due out until later next year.

BlockbustersWeL!ke: Great start for the Watchmen

mwl
Watchmen brought in $4.6 million from midnight screenings that took place early Friday, according to Media by Numbers. Zack Snyder's anticipated adaptation of Alan Moore's landmark comic played at midnight last night in 1,595 theaters nationwide, including 124 IMAX presentations, all of which sold out (forcing the addition of about 20 screenings at 3 a.m.). By comparison, Snyder's last violent comic-book epic, 300, grossed $2.5 mil in the same sort of early showings two years ago; it went on to bank $70.9 mil over the course of its first weekend. The R-rated Watchmen opens today around the world. While a fair weekend projection can't be based on that early $4.6 mil figure, it's certainly safe to say that the movie is off to a very good start.
